In a new study by Harvard Business Review, Dr. Paul Hammerness and Margaret Moore have found that negative emotions often sabotage our ability to stay focused on the task at hand. These negative thoughts are translated as signals of a threat, often interfering with the brain’s ability to solve problems, stay focused, or do other cognitive work. “Positive emotions and thoughts do the opposite — they improve the brain’s executive function, and so help open the door to creative and strategic thinking.”
You can test your positivity with this short quiz by University of North Carolina’s Dr. Barbara Fredrickson. To combat this Negative Ned/Nancy syndrome, the study suggests exercising, meditating, and sleeping well are all keys to positive attitude.
